Let’s have an honest conversation about something students don’t want to talk about — and universities don’t want to ignore. Is Using an Assignment Writing Service Cheating? Discover the ethical boundaries, academic risks, and what constitutes a violation of academic integrity.

 At some time in our students’ schooling lives, there is a question at the back of everyone’s mind. It could be at 2 AM, just before a deadline, or when there are three papers due, a part-time job, a family disaster and a cold that just won’t go away for three days in a row. The answer is straightforward: Why bother to do this? Why do I need to do this myself? Services can be found to write assignments. They’re not hiding. You have no doubt seen the ads! Then, yearly, millions of students use them without anyone knowing — a bit apprehensive, a bit nervously, without necessarily understanding the significance. So let’s just take some time to think about it. Is Assignment Writing Service Cheating? There’s no straightforward answer because of the two sides; it’s not as clear as it seems. Before you begin considering the assignment writing service, you must ask yourself the question, “What is an assignment writing service?” First, let’s clarify what we are discussing here and be cognizant of the ethics. Grant writing services are providers or freelance writers who, for a charge, will study and create an academic paper for you. You provide them with the topic, the length required of the essay, the deadline and possibly course notes — and they return a completed essay, report, or dissertation. Some services claim to offer “model answers” or “study guides. But others do not use the euphemisms. In either case, the process of the core transaction is the same: the money is deposited, the written work is written, and the student turns the written work in as his work.

The ethical part of it is the last part, which is submitting it as your own. Tho’ it seemeth that yes, it is cheating! Don’t flirt around the fact! You don’t know what you are talking about if you do a written project for your university, asking them to show that you do, but you give them a paper written by someone else. You’re letting your professor, your school and your future employer or clients know that you did it. I understand this. If you did not, and you do not! The majority of universities have a clear definition of academic dishonesty. Perhaps the most highly publicised form of cheating is known as Contract Cheating, which is the term used for when someone pays another student to do their work for them.Contract cheating – otherwise known as when someone pays another student to write their work – is a crime that is featured in almost every institution’s rules and regulations. It also has legal aspects in many countries. In 2022, the UK also had legislation enacted that prohibits the marketing of essay mill services to students. Australia was soon to follow with similar laws. These are not “rules” arbitrarily imposed by anyone, they are rules that are in accordance with a general agreement that such deception is counter to the purpose of education. But there’s a reason for school other than the certificate at the end. Homework does not consist solely of busy work. If you are having difficulty in researching and writing an essay, something occurs in your brain. You develop skills in information organisation. Development of argumentation skills. You get to know how to work within a time constraint and in a stressful environment. These are the abilities that do transfer into the real world, and which you can’t outsource. The fairness argument has to be added too. The student who was awake till midnight working on the same essay, who didn’t have the money to pay a service to write it for him/her, or who didn’t, is playing on an uneven field when he or she is compared to you. Academic performance can be a determining factor in getting a job, a graduate programme, a grade, and a scholarship. If some students cheat, and others do not, it will work against the honest students. Case That It’s… Complicated, genuinely messy is where it gets.It’s genuinely messy, which is where it gets. Academic integrity is a hot topic in the world of academic institutions, but it’s not always a hot topic to discuss why students seek out academic integrity services. What about the international student who is still learning English as their second language, who pays a high tuition fee, works two jobs to pay for college, then does an assignment in English as their second language, but finds it difficult to do in their first? Do they expect their use of a writing service, for whatever reasons it may be, to be the same as a comfortably-off domestic student who just couldn’t be bothered to figure out how to structure his or her paper and what is expected of it? Or a student who has a long-term health, mental health or emergency in their family. They’ve requested an extension, received a denial, and now they are considering a zero or a last resort. Are they “gaming” the system in order to get a better grade, or like a gamer does to get a higher GPA? The context is important — it doesn’t always alter the technical aspect of what is going on. In some instances, there is also a true question as to what students are being evaluated on. How can it be that we evaluate learning instead of endurance if a course requires five major papers in one semester, with exams, lab reports and presentations? Not all students, however, are equal, and some say—with some justification—there is too much work to do to read every piece. None of this is okay in the eyes of the cheater or the teacher. However, it does indicate that it is not just “students are lazy and dishonest” that can be the starting and end point of the conversation. The Grey Zones No One Speaks Of. Let’s dive in and have a look at some interesting things: a few practices exist, which are quite normal, and they are found right next to the assignment writing services. The service of proofreading is a commonly used one. You write the essay, and someone else edits it for grammatical mistakes and more precise word order – OK.There is a wide range of acceptance of tutors. No, we don’t consider that cheating. So, where is the line? It’s neither too much nor too little — just a little too little, in fact — between “significant help” and “outsourcing of thought. Well, the honest answer is that the line is at the point of misrepresentation: When you purport to write something that you did not, and allege that it is all your own, and you are the person under scrutiny for its intellectual work. To find out what students are really interested in: It’s rare to find a student who intends to take a plunge into an assignment writing service when they’re thinking, “I want to cheat.” They are on their way to thinking one of a number of things: I’m too embarrassed to ask about this topic, I don’t understand it. In times of high stress in the academic arena, where it appears everyone is doing fine (but they are not), there’s a reason help-seeking can feel like failure. A student who really doesn’t get what is going on deserves to be taught by someone, not a ghostwriter, but if it’s not going to be taught to them, it will be accessible to them. I am so busy, and it’s just a week that I have to get through. The mental health situation of students is documented to be a crisis in universities around the world. If you are a nursing student and you have had someone else write your pharmacology essays, then you don’t know pharmacology. You should be competent with your degree. If it’s not you, for whom it was arranged to perform, then in the long run, the person most affected is not your professor. It’s you. The University of Idaho needs to do better.Here are a few things that Universities should do better. This is NOT a student’s responsibility only. Universities should create an assessment that is really difficult to outsource. When you get rid of the specific essay prompt, it is simple to deliver your essay to a writing service. In-class exams, viva voce, continual project portfolio, personal reflections related to specific course experiences, and presentation – all require the presence and engagement of the student. The more that the assessments are process-based as opposed to product-based, the more difficult it will be to cheat. Help must also be made more accessible for the Universities. The moral implications of betraying a promise of competency to anybody you’ll ever work for are different when you realise your degree is a promise of competency. Yes, it is cheating! — Is It Cheating? Yes. In virtually all academic settings, cheating involves turning in someone else’s work as if it were your own. Not on any whim, but because it involves fooling the people who are evaluating you, the other people who are judging you, and, ultimately, the people who rely on your letters of recommendation, the employers and clients. Simply being the resident “weaker-willed” or “coward” does not mean you are not sympathetic to the reasons that students come to be there. The pressures are here for real. Often, the support systems are lacking. Some of the assessments are sometimes not inspiring. These are students who are not cynical fraudsters; they’re individuals who are facing hardship and are making a poor choice of coping. Now, if you’re a student thinking about making use of one of these services at this very moment, here’s what I would have you do: Think about what you want to really accomplish. If it’s a qualification that you intend to use in a serious profession, then the chasm you’re building between the paper and real skills will be apparent at some point and that chasm will hurt. When work is piling up, and you’re not sure where to get help, there are things that feel scarier, but actually are better. Extensions, support services, counselling or a real discussion with your tutor — these are all things you could do that would be better. If you are a university administrator reading this, you don’t have to rely on more severe consequences and enhanced plagiarism detection software as your sole solution to the issue of contract cheating. It involves a sincere attempt to understand why students are not willing to accept the status quo and to create systems to make it simpler to be honest than to be dishonest. Final Thought: Academic honesty is one of those concepts that does not always seem to be easy to apply in practice, at 2 am before a 6-hour deadline. It’s not an invention of my own; it’s a real thing, and if someone says they haven’t heard of such tension, then they haven’t spoken to enough students. Learning is irreplaceable, but the agonies and insights of sitting with a tricky question, not knowing where to go, getting lost in all the confusion, and making something that is truly yours, that’s what builds something that a hired essay writer never can. It builds you. But at the bottom line, that is how you’re here.
